Thinking of Home
Materials:
Embroidery and beadwork on linen
Drawing on my experience as a migrant, this piece explores the idealisation of home from abroad...
Created through the eye of an Irish migrant, "Thinking of home" is a meditation on how Ireland becomes more glittering and verdant in the mind of her exiled peoples, and ideates nostalgia for home through the slow process of needlework and beading. I haven't yet finished it, but as the beading draws to a close, I've tried to make a ceramic frame that echoes the tones and textures of the artwork itself. That ultimately failed and I resorted to a round frame for the Interim Show, which I was unhappy with. Moving forward I'm in the very last stages of beadwork and am still trying to figure out how to display the hoop.
So far, the project has taken nearly 100 hours of hand-beading and hand-embroidery, creating a rich and densely textured piece in the ten-inch hoop.
