Sea Floor
Materials:
Embroidery, beadwork and seashells on linen
A first attempt at embellished embroidery...
This work was directly inspired by those of my grandmother, whose own embroidery is embellished with beads, three-dimensional elements and most importantly seashells. Never knowing when to stop, I couldn't resist taking her owns style a step further and adding hundreds of seed beads, tiny French knots and sequins that give what I have come to call a sea floor a glittering ocean-like effect. Larger round beads give the effect of bubbles and shells apparently strapped down give the impression of harbouring fantastical treasures. Small pieces of gold wire and findings both add to the glitter and give a sense of motion, while also serving as hints towards fantasy creatures of folklore.
